Distribuzioni Linux senza systemd: piccola guida per chi vuole ancora scegliere

In pochi anni systemd si è diffuso praticamente ovunque. In un mondo come quello Linux — storicamente fatto di diversità: sistemi di installazione diversi, gestione del software diversa, ambienti grafici diversi — la cosa ha lasciato pone qualche domanda. Funziona meglio degli altri? Non necessariamente. È indispensabile? Nemmeno. E allora vale la pena raccogliere qualche idea su quel che resta, o avanza, in alternativa.

Abbiamo creato un elenco di distribuzioni che hanno scelto un init diverso: per filosofia, per leggerezza e velocità di esecuzione, per semplicità di scrittura e aggiornamento. O semplicemente perché il proprio sistema è più vecchio di systemd. Non è una crociata e non è un dibattito tecnico: solo il piacere di avere ancora una scelta o magari di più.

Da segnalare anche il nuovo desktop Noctalia, una shell moderna e minimale pensata per affiancare il compositor Wayland Niri — quest’ultimo scritto in Rust — che si sta dimostrando sorprendentemente reattiva e stabile, con lo scopo dichiarato di esplorare alternative a systemd.

List of systemd-free Linux distributions

In just a few years, systemd has spread practically everywhere. In a world like that of Linux — historically made of diversity: different installation systems, different software management, different graphical environments — this has raised a few questions. Does it work better than the others? Not necessarily. Is it indispensable? Not at all. And so it’s worth gathering a few ideas about what is left, or lingers on, as an alternative.

We have put together a list of distributions that have chosen a different init: for philosophy, for lightness and speed of execution, for simplicity of writing and updating. Or simply because their own system is older than systemd. It is not a crusade and not a technical debate: just the pleasure of still having a choice, or perhaps more than one.

Worth mentioning too is the new Noctalia desktop, a modern, minimal shell designed to complement the Wayland compositor Niri — the latter written in Rust — which is proving surprisingly responsive and stable, with the declared aim of exploring alternatives to systemd.
